Percentage of planned budget notification

I would love the ability to have a notification sent via SMS or the app to inform me that I have X amount left for a planned budget category. This would not be applicable to all categories but the variable categories, such as groceries or eating out. The monthly recurring debit orders would not need this notification.

The context: My wife uses a linked credit card on my account to do the grocery shopping and therefore I get the SMS notification from my bank to tell me what she has spent. The problem is, she has no idea how much she has spent and how much grocery budget she has left for the month. By the time I have a look at the app it is too late, she has gone over budget again. The same applies for eating out.

This feature would therefore require the ability to mark which categories require the notification. The notification would only need to be sent after a decided threshold is met. This could be sent on a daily basis if there has been a balance change and if the threshold has been met.

I hope you feel this would be valuable. Looking forward to your response.

  • Hi Greg,

Thanks for getting in touch and sending through your suggestion! That's a great idea.

There's plenty of valuable insights we can provide via push notifications to your mobile phone, and we plan to do just that in future! Unfortunately, we don't have access to real-time data from most banks. We have to wait for pending transactions to clear before we're able to import them, which of course adds some complication to the mix. However, there's still a lot we plan to do in this space despite that fact. Please keep an eye out for these features going forward ;)

I'll make sure to forward your feedback on to our product design team. Thanks again for sending it through!

  • But Surely if she has access to the app on her phone, then when she is out and about she can login at anytime and see the remaining balance as well. So simplest solution would be to give her access to the app to monitor the spending on her side as well

  • Hi Greg,

Your wife is certainly able to do that in the mean time. She simply needs to log into the app using your email address and password. Your information lives in the cloud, so it can be accessed via our Android/iOS apps, or website at any time :)

  • Thanks for the prompt feedback. I have setup the app on her phone and showed her how to use it.The only problem with this is that is relies on her "wanting" to log into the app. People are inherently lazy so I do think a push notification would be great. I do understand the lag in real-time data.

By the way, I love the app. I've requested my bank to develop this sort of app a number of times over the last few years. I'm so happy someone finally did it.

  • Any progress on this?

It's something I would find very useful. Of course I can log in at any time to see my remaining spend but the point is, due to being busy and admittedly not 100% self disciplined, some sort of push notification will help keep me in line!

  • Hello,

    Thanks for getting in touch!

I'm afraid this hasn't been implemented, but we have started to dabble into push notifications - particularly in terms of Nudges. I'll be sure to pass your comments on to our Product Design team as well to help them gauge demand. Thanks for sharing them with us :)
