Two ideas: cash tracking & cost splitting

Hi guys,

Thanks for creating such a helpful app, especially one that is now free to use. I'm making a huge effort to get my finances in order and it's been very useful to me.

Currently, there are two separate functions that I need and am using other Apps for, but with some (probably a lot) of a work, could be incorporated into 22seven.

  • Cost splitting: my partner and I are currently spending from the same account, but I want to be able to track our costs separately. We are using a separate "Cost splits" app to do this, but if 22seven could allow us to Categorise a single transaction under multiple categories, we wouldn't need to (perhaps this is possible and I haven't discovered how?).

  • Cash spending. I want to keep all my expenditure in the same place, and at the moment 22seven only helps me keep track of what comes directly out of my accounts. If there was a functionality to define "Cash" as separate account, and then manually add all of my cash transactions there, I wouldn't need a separate App to track my expenses holistically. Again, it would be great to hear if there is a clever way to do this that I haven't discovered, but this is my current thinking.

Cheers,
Andrew

  • Hi Andrew,

We truly believe that 22seven can help you do MORE with your money, so it's really great getting feedback like this. Thanks so much :)

Regarding your first question, there are two ways in which you can possibly handle this scenario. If you're both spending from the same account, perhaps consider adding a suffix to each transaction on that account. One for you and one for your partner. That way you'll still have the original transaction descriptor, but you'll have the partner suffix that makes it a little clearer who spent what where. Those suffixes will be searchable as well in the Transactions screen.

To answer your second question, currently you can only track cash transactions through 22seven if the cash was withdrawn from any of your linked accounts. You can however split your transactions in up to 5 portions and recategorise the split portions, which helps you track what you spent the cash on a little bit better.

Hope that helps? If not, please let me know.

  • Hi Andre,

    Thanks for the response.

Funnily enough, your second suggestion (splitting transactions) actually solves my first problem (splitting costs), because I don't need to track my partner's costs for her, I just need to make sure they are not included in mine - so I can allocate them to a separate single category for her.

However, splitting still doesn't do quite enough to allow me to track cash expenses - I would need many more splitting options than 5, and would be inconvenient going back to the same transaction every time. I see that other users have raised similar issues though, so I'm confident the team would be able to come up with a better solution for cash tracking given time, and I can ditch other finance-related apps altogether!

    Cheers,
    Andrew
