How to exclude accounts from the budget?

The budget feature is great, however, is there a way to exclude transactions from accounts other than my personal bank account? I have a business account open and it pulls in the transactions from this account to my budget, I would like to use the budget solely for personal transactions if possible.

  • Hi Ivailo,

Thanks for the question. Unfortunately, there isn't any way to exclude transactions from certain accounts, as your budget displays transactions from all your transactional accounts by default.

The only option for you would be to delete your business accounts from your 22seven profile entirely. You can do this from your accounts screen by clicking on the business accounts, and selecting the delete account option. When asked if you'd like to keep the transactions from this account, deselect the the 'keep transactions' checkbox.

Please let me know if that would work for you?

  • Sorry for the "me too", but I'd like to second a request for this. Or even better to apply similar filters to the budget as to everything else. In my case, the use case is that we're renovating and have the money for that in a particular account. I want to be able to see transactions from this account in transaction lists and in my net worth calculations, but it completely throws off my month to month budgeting, it's completely useless information in that context.

  • Hi Matt,

"Me too's" are more than welcome here :)

I can definitely see how this functionality could be useful in your scenario. I'll share your "me too" with the team. Enhancing the Budget space is on our radar, so it definitely helps to get feedback like this. We're taking notes!

I have regular transfers to my linked savings accounts which reflect as income/expenses on my budget, making the budget inaccurate.

  • Hi Scrooge,

In this case, you would mark these particular transactions as 'Transfers' (the grey spending group). This will hide those transactions from your budget.

Unfortunately, you cannot filter accounts from the Budget - all transactional accounts linked (i.e. cheque, savings, and credit cards) will display their transactions in the Budget.

Marking those transactions as Transfers should resolve the issue for you here, but we're happy to pass on the feedback from this discussion.

  • I remember that this was possible when I started using 22seven 2 years ago. It is n major annoyance that a feature that once worked, does not work anymore.

  • Hi,

I have the same request ('Me Too!').   I have both Private and Business accounts in my profile and want to be able to create two different Budgets: filter out the business accounts for my private budget and vice versa for the business budget.

Also, I have a current Budget set up on my profile.   How do I clear this and start from scratch?

    Regards,

    Victor

  • Hi Victor,

As it stands now, you will have to create a 2nd 22seven account if you want to have separate personal and business budgets.

Since 22seven is designed primarily for personal budgeting (rather than business budgeting), all linked current, credit card, and savings accounts will appear in the budget.

Of course, we are always looking to improve our offering so we're happy to pass on this feedback to the rest of the team.

As for your Budget, you can only start from scratch if you delete your transactions - your budget only exists if you have transactions.

You can set budgeted amounts for your categories as well though, instead of relying on the average amount generated from your previous spending.

    Hey all,

I would like to exclude a category from my budget.

Use case: I use my personal CC for some business transactions and mark it as "Business", in the budget this throws everything off!

I'd love to be able to simply exclude/filter it out.

    Best,

    David

  • Hi again David,

Just replying here also as I replied on your separate post :) So for the benefit of others reading this post, I'm popping the reply down here also.

In situations like this, you can keep the category the same, but you can change the Spending Group for those transactions to the Transfer Spending Group. This will remove those transactions from all calculations, and hide them from the Budget page.

  • I similarly have the same problem with my Easy Equities account for example.

Every single day there is a "cash management fee" and" interest" transaction, which I then have to categorize as Transfer.

I want the Easy equities account as part of my 22seven profile to include it in my net worth, but I don't need every single transaction listed in my budget!

  • Hi Hugo,

Your Budget will only ever display transactions from your cheque, credit card, and savings accounts. Unfortunately, you cannot change this as a setting.

Transactions from investment accounts, like Easy Equities, will be collected BUT they will not be displayed in the Budget. They will be available on the Transactions page though, where all of your transactions across all accounts are held.

Furthermore, you cannot elect to stop collecting transactions for a linked account - if it is linked, the balances and transactions will both come through.

I hope that this helps, but do let us know if you have any further feedback.

  • MAJOR Me Too! here.

I've moved over from YNAB (primarily because of price), and while I'm immensely impressed with your software, the inability to move savings accounts off-budget is a huge headache. Like, "I can't really use the budgeting element of your software" huge.

I want my budget to only reflect my cheque and credit accounts, but still be able to see and manage my savings accounts the same profile. If my savings accounts are reflected in my budget it suddenly seems as though I have a bunch more money to spend for the month, which is not the case.

Help me out here guys. I really want to continue using your software, but this is kind of a deal-breaker for me. Is there a workaround (like creating a "Long Term Savings" category and shunting all the savings monies in there) that will work month to month?

For example, say I have R10k across all my savings accounts. I want that off my main budget, so I shunt it all into my new "Long Term Savings" category (which now reads R10k of R10k). What will happen next month with that category? Will it try allocate R10k more every month (even though it grows at, say R500/month)?

  • Hi David,

You can’t filter accounts from your budget at the moment, but this is something we’re definitely keen to do, I will surely pass your feedback on to our Product team to help them potentially prioritise this.

If you have further questions please let us know :)

  • Hi Garron

I appreciate that you responded, but you didn't really answer my questions at all. Apologies if I didn't make them clear.

As per my post, I do understand that filtering accounts from the budget isn't possible at the moment (although it really should be high up on your devs to-do list ;).

    The questions I have are:

    1. Do you guys know of any workarounds for this issue (simple solutions or dirty hacks; as long as it works for now)?

    2. How would 22seven handle the example I posited? Would it try allocate R10k every month to that category? Would it allocate nothing? Or would it do something else entirely?

    Thank you for your time.

  • Hi David,

    Sorry about that!

What I'd suggest doing is categorising the transactions from your savings accounts into the Transfer spending group. You can choose any category you find appropriate, or create your own one, as the category isn't too important here. What is important is that transactions in the Transfer spending group won't count towards your totals at all. You'll notice they're displayed in a separate section right at the bottom of your Budget tab ("You have [x] transfers").

As a result, by doing the above for all transactions on your savings accounts, only the transactions from your cheque accounts and credit cards should reflect in the categories of your Budget. Providing the transactions on your savings accounts have similar descriptors from month to month, 22seven should automatically place them in the Transfer spending group and the category you chose when you first categorised them as per the above.

To quickly place all of your transactions from your savings accounts into the Transfer spending group and category of your choice, you can perform an Advanced Search on the Transactions tab to filter the screen to only display transactions from those accounts. Then simply click in the Select All box and select the Categorise button.

I hope this helps? Shout if you have any other questions :)

  • No worries, and thanks for getting back to me with a comprehensive answer Lydon :)

I like that idea, and it should be easy enough to implement. I'll give it a shot and reply on this thread if I run into any issues.

    Peace

Use case: I have investment accounts, e.g. Standlib, Liberty, and other accounts like clothing etc. I don't want to see all the activity from those transactions, e.g. interest/purchase on clothing account, in my budget. But I don't want to have to set each transaction type in that account to Transfer either, because it isn't a transfer.

Request: Can I have an option to mark an account to "Exclude transactions from budget"?

  • Hi Nanette,

Thanks so much for getting in touch.

There is no way to exclude certain accounts, at this point in time. The Budget page is reserved exclusively for transactional accounts (i.e. cheque, savings, and credit cards), and transactions from any other types of accounts (investments/loans etc) won't show up in the Budget.

We have been having discussions internally regarding giving you the ability to set which accounts appear and which account do not in the Budget, and I'll be happy to pass your feedback on to the Product Team so that we can add your voice to the discussion.
